The clinical research group is developing non-invasive imaging modalities based on cardiac ultrasound for the diagnosis of patients with heart disease.

Particular areas of research include coronary artery disease, heart failure and other heart muscle disease. We are exploring the use of intravenous injections of microbubbles to look at myocardial perfusion in coronary artery disease patients and in the laboratory, to conjugate those microbubbles with various antibodies.

Development is underway of pioneering specific microbubbles conjugated with anti e-selectin antibodies for the detection of myocardial inflammation. For this, we are working with Professor Dorian Haskard’s group to develop the antibodies and with Professor Martin Blomley’s and Seddon’s groups to construct the microbubbles.

microbubbleOther echocardiographic imaging modalities that we are exploring are tissue Doppler imaging for the early diagnosis of cardiomyopathies.

We have extensive collaborations with other groups within and outside the NHLI.
