Prizes Awarded

  • Simon Cuhlmann won the Young Investigator Award at the British Society for Cardiovascular Research/ British Atherosclerosis Society joint meeting held in Manchester, June 2010. Title of presentation: c-Jun N-terminal kinase promotes endothelial activation at atherosclerosis-prone sites by enhancing expression of NF-κB transcription factors.
  • Kim Van der Heiden won the prize for best oral presentation at the ‘5th International Symposium on Biomechanics in Vascular Biology and Cardiovascular Disease’ which was held in April 2010 in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Title of presentation: “Shear stress regulates NF-κB expression in endothelial cells via c-Jun N-terminal kinase”.
  • Mustafa Zakkar won the Society for Cardiovascular Surgery in Great Britain and Ireland 2010 Ronald Edwards Medal for his presentation: “Dexamethasone arterializes venous endothelial cells by inducing MAP Kinase phosphatase-1 (MKP-1): A novel anti-inflammatory treatment for vein grafts”.
  • Kim Van der Heiden won the 2009 Promega UK Young Life Scientist Award. Title of presentation: “Shear stress and sulforaphane protect arteries from inflammation by activating the transcription factor Nrf2'”.
  • Simon Cuhlmann won the Imperial College Graduate School of Life Sciences and Medicine Best Poster Prize in 2009. Title of presentation: “NF-kappaB expression and activity are decreased at regions of the arterial tree that are protected from inflammation and atherosclerosis.”
  • Mustafa Zakker won the Best Poster Prize at the Imperial College Cardiovascular Technology Network meeting in 2008 . Title of presentation: “Increased endothelial MAP kinase phosphatase-1 expression suppresses pro-inflammatory activation at sites of the arterial tree that are resistant to atherosclerosis.”
  • Le Luong won the Best Abstract Prize at the Renal Association Annual Congress in 2008. Title of presentation: “A20, a negative regulator of NF-κB, suppresses endothelial activation in response to hypoxia/ reoxygenation and protects kidneys from ischemia/ reperfusion injury ”.
  • Hera Chaudhury won an Imperial College Faculties of Life Sciences and Medicine Best Poster Prize in 2008. Title of presentation: “Endothelial cells at atheroprone sites express activated c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) which induces pro-apoptotic transcripts.”
  • Mustafa Zakker won an Imperial College Faculties of Life Sciences and Medicine Best Poster Prize in 2008. Title of presentation: “Increased endothelial MAP kinase phosphatase-1 expression suppresses pro-inflammatory activation at sites of the arterial tree that are resistant to atherosclerosis.”
  • Karine Enesa won an Imperial College Faculties of Life Sciences and Medicine Best Poster Prize in 2005. Title of presentation: “Biochemical studies of A20, an anti-inflammatory ubiquitin ligase”.
