NHLI Foundation Postdoctoral Travel Awards

In order to continue training young scientists, the NHLI Foundation has generously donated funds to support travel awards for NHLI Postdoctoral Research Associates and Research Fellows for the purpose of presenting at conferences or attending scientific workshops in the fields of cardiovascular and respiratory research.

This opportunity has now also been extended to newly appointed academic non-clinical Lecturers.  To be eligible to apply, Lecturers must be within the first 24 months of their academic appointment.

Applicants can also apply for funding to cover extra-ordinary costs relating to caring responsibilities when presenting at such meetings e.g. costs related to caring for dependents, such as parents or funds required to cover additional childcare costs whilst attending a meeting.  Applicants may also apply for funding for extra-ordinary costs in addition to travel funding which they have already secured from other sources.

Those in receipt of an NHLI Foundation travel award are expected to provide a report detailing the conference proceedings and how the event relates to their own research.  This document will be used to communicate to their colleagues within NHLI as well as to the Foundation.  This report should be written and submitted within one week of returning from the conference attended.

Only those who are NHLI employees at the time and who hold a contract two months beyond the date of the meeting are eligible to apply.  We are only able to accept applications for meetings that take place at least one calendar month after the closing date of the competition.  Travel awards will be paid via an expense claim with appropriate receipts up to the amount of the award.

Costs can include:

  • Airfare, rail or other travel as appropriate (including local travel)
  • Subsistence
  • Registration fees
  • Extra-ordinary costs relating to caring responsibilities

Costs cannot include: 

  • Research expenses
  • Equipment
  • Departmental costs
  • Bench fees
  • Medical insurance
  • Excess baggage costs
  • Contributions towards salaries
  • Training courses**
  • Expenses due to cancellations – not liable for costs if activity is cancelled.
  • Shipping costs
  • Visa charges
  • Work permits
  • Immunisations

Travel Awards will be made in the order of:

  • £250 for travel within UK
  • £500 for travel within Europe
  • £2,000 for travel outside of Europe

** Applications for specialised training courses within the UK will be considered.

Extra-ordinary cost awards
The limit for these awards is flexible and will be determined on a case-by-case basis.

Past award winners

The NHLI Foundation Postdoctoral Travel Awards are held twice a year, in winter and summer.  Annual closing dates for the competition are typically at the end of January and July.

We are now accepting submissions for the January 2015 round of the awards.  The completed application form should be sent to Alun Owen by email no later than 10am, Friday 30th January 2015.
