Course structure

9-month part-time PGCert; 18-month part-time PGDip; 1-year full-time MSc; 2-year part-time MSc

PGCert students will take three taught modules:

  • the core compulsory core module in Preventive Cardiology Theory and Practice AND
  • two specialist optional modules.

PGDip and MSc students will take six taught modules:

  • three compulsory core modules AND
  • three specialist optional modules.

MSc students additionally complete one further compulsory module:

  • Research project .

Methods of delivery

The teaching format will generally include:

  • a number of lectures on the topic
  • e-based preventive cardiology with podcasts, interactive learning tasks and discussion forums
  • tutor-directed practical or discussion sessions
  • guest seminar presentations
  • journal clubs
  • clinical observation visits

Part time PGCert students

  • From the 10th - 14th October 2011 students attend a five day intensive course induction programme
  • Subsequently for the remainder of Term One (October to January) students' attend weekly, each Wednesday (or use our virtual facilities) for the core module 'Preventive Cardiology Theory and Practice'.
  • During Terms Two and Three (January to July) students' attend the taught component of their optional specialist modules. Specialist modules run in 3-4 day blocks of face-to-face teaching followed by e-based learning.
  • All students are required to attend assessment days.

Full time MSc students

  • From October 10th - 14th 2011 students attend a five day intensive course induction programme
  • Subsequently during Term One (October to January) students attend weekly, each Wednesday and Thursday for their core modules 'Preventive Cardiology Theory and Practice' and 'Research Methods'.
  • During Terms Two and Three (January to July) students attend the taught component of their optional specialist modules. Specialist modules run in 3-4 day blocks of face-to-face teaching followed by e-based learning.
  • In addition, during Terms Two and Three students attend seminars and personal tutoring for the core module 'Research Project'. These seminars are dispersed through the terms and timetabled on Thursdays.
  • During Terms One, Two and Three, students attend clinical visits for the core module 'Reflective Clinical Practice'.
  • Full-time students are expected to attend all face-to-face teaching and are not offered the part distance-learning option. This is only available to part-time students.  

Part time PGDip and MSc students

YEAR 1:

  • From October 10th - 14th 2011 all part-time MSc and PGDip students attend a five day intensive course induction programme
  • Subsequently for the remainder of Term One (October to January) students' attend weekly, each Wednesday (or use our virtual facilities) for the core module 'Preventive Cardiology Theory and Practice'.
  • During Terms Two and Three (January to July) of students' attend the taught component of their optional specialist modules. Specialist modules run in 3-4 day blocks of face-to-face teaching followed by e-based learning.

YEAR 2:

  • During Term One of the second year students’ attend a one-week module introduction followed by weekly teaching (or use our virtual facilities) each Thursday for 'Research Methods'.
  • Dispersed throughout the duration of studies students attend clinical visits for the core module 'Reflective Clinical Practice'.
  • MSc students apply their theoretical knowledge gained in 'Research Methods' in Term One to undertake an individual primary research project from January to September. Students attend seminars and personal tutoring for this final core module.The seminars are dispersed through the terms and are usually timetabled on Thursdays.

 

  • All students are required to attend assessment days.
