Please note: applicants for PhD positions should normally have at least an upper second class (2i) honours degree UK equivalent (for four-year programmes), AND have, or be in the process of obtaining, a MRes or MSc degree in an appropriate discipline for three-year programmes.

Our basic scientists come from a range of disciplines including pharmacology, biology, physics and physiology.  The Institute has an average of 45 new basic science students starting during each academic year, many of which through programmes detailed below.

You can also join the Institute if you are the recipient from one of the following Imperial programmes:

In addition to the programmes detailed above, specific projects are routinely advertised to study under the supervision of NHLI supervisors who have obtained funding from sources such as the Arthritis Research Campaign, British Heart Foundation, Heart Research UK, British Lung Foundation, Colt Foundation and Research Council CASE awards.  NHLI also boasts several industry funded studentships each year.

When applications are open, the studentships are advertised on the Institute's Current Studentships page.

In addition to these studentships, the Institute is also willing to facilitate applicants, Home/EU and Overseas in their efforts to obtain funding from other sources e.g. applicants' home research councils, etc. If applicants wish to obtain an offer of a PhD place, subject to their obtaining suitable funding, we strongly encourage them to contact a potential supervisor, discuss a potential project, and then to apply on-line at the following link - http://www3.imperial.ac.uk/pgprospectus/applicationforms.

Importantly, please note that applications received without prior consultation or discussion are very unlikely to be accepted. If successful, applicants will then be offered a place subject to funding, with which they can use to solicit funding from an appropriate agency.
