Software

There are two types of software categories. The first is free software that is covered by the College's campus agreement site licenses. The second is software that must be paid for. All paid for software should be purchased by a member of DIDE IT. Software must be paid for from project or grant funding, and the project/grant number must therefore be given when requesting software.

Free Software

Below is a list of free software that is commonly used within DIDE:

  • Microsoft Office
  • Microsoft Visual Studio*
  • Symantec Endpoint Protection
  • EndNote
  • Reference Manager*
  • WinZip

All of these products, except those with a *star next to them, will be installed by default on a new computer or laptop (except Apple Macs) that you purchase from DIDE IT. If it is not installed for any reason, or you need to reinstall it or upgrade it to a newer version, you will need to follow these steps:

  1. Browse to the ICT Software Shop website (College login required).
  2. Click on Select and Download Software.
  3. Click on the relevant software type (e.g. Microsoft Campus for Microsoft Office).
  4. Tick the box next to the product you require, and click on the Accept button.
  5. Read the licensing terms and copyright agreement, and click on the Accept button if you agree.
  6. Click on the Complete Order button to confirm your request.
  7. You will shortly receive an e-mail from ICT Software Shop with instructions on how to obtain the software. These instructions will not work from the DIDE network, so forward this e-mail to a member of DIDE IT, who can give you access to the software installation files on our server.

Paid for Software

Below is a list of software, that must be paid for from a project/grant, and that is commonly used within DIDE:

  • Adobe Acrobat/Creative Suite
  • Intel Compilers - obtained from Polyhedron Software
  • Maple
  • Mathematica (see Mathematica registration note in the FAQs)
  • Matlab
  • SPSS
  • Stata & Stat/Transfer - obtained from Timberlake

If you require a license for one of these items of software, you will need to follow these steps:

  1. Browse to the ICT Software Shop website (College login required), unless it is obtained via an external supplier (in which case, click on the link to the supplier in the list above).
  2. Click on the relevant software type (e.g. Adobe Licensing Scheme for Adobe Acrobat).
  3. The webpage will show you the product you require and the cost of a license.
  4. The webpage will have a link to a license request form. Click on the link to download the form and fill it in with the name of the software, price, and your contact details.
  5. Give this form to a member of DIDE IT, along with the project/grant code from which the money will be taken, who will process your request for you.

Departmentally Licensed Software

DIDE has three departmental software licenses that it has paid for and that everyone in the department can use if they wish. The software available is:

Please note that the cost of the departmental license is spread between the groups that have people that use the software. If you would like to use one of these items of software, please contact a member of DIDE IT who will give you access to the software installation files on our server.

If you would like to learn more about the Microsoft Office suite, or any of the individual components (Word, Excel etc.), then you can do so by using the LearningGuide Solutions provided by ICT. You can study at your own pace, and you can get information on specific functions within an Office application (e.g. mail merge in Word) if you prefer.
