Health Services Research Unit (HSRU)
Projects and initiatives
The unit, which is headed by Professor Azeem Majeed, focuses on three areas of research:
- Primary care epidemiology & chronic disease management
- Health systems performance and health services research
- The use of information technology and health informatics to improve health system performance and public health.
The unit has considerable expertise in the use of data from routine NHS information systems to support research & development. This includes advanced statistical and computational methods for data analysis. Other areas of work and expertise include, health policy, qualitative research methods, systematic reviews, medical ethics, and prescribing safety.

Postgraduate Training
Research training
The unit plays a major role in the Imperial College Masters of Public Health Programme (MPH), for which Professor Azeem Majeed is the Course Director. The MPH programme provides a comprehensive training in primary care and public health research methods, with a focus on quantitative skills. The unit also has an active MD/PhD programme and welcomes applications from researchers interested in undertaking a PhD on one of our research themes. Clinical Training
The unit hosts F2 doctors, Academic Fellows in Public Health, and Specialist Registrars and Trainees in Public Health. The unit also runs a series of postgraduate certificate courses for general practitioners, practice nurses, and other health professionals on topics such as diabetes.There are also a range of short courses in areas such as evidence based healthcare, clinical trials, and informatics.
