What is Clinical Methods Teaching?

It is the teaching of basic clinical skills of both history taking and examination to 3rd year students as part of their initial medical and surgical clinical attachments. (back to top)

How does it work?

Students are attached to a consultant firm for a 6-10 week block and spend 1 session (2hours) per week with a GP. Attendance at this is compulsory, and it provides protected teaching time for the students. (back to top)

What training is needed to become a GP teacher for CMT?

There is a 2 day training course for teachers held at Imperial three times a year and optional refresher days throughout the year. (back to top)

What commitment is needed?

You can choose to teach on as many or as few blocks as you wish. The commitment is to 1 session per week for each block that you elect to teach on. (back to top)

How is teaching reimbursed?

Your practice will be reimbursed £155.55, as well as an additional 8% administration fee, for each CMT session. (back to top)

Students consistently rate their teaching in general practice as one of the most useful parts of their clinical attachment. (back to top)

Why teach CMT?

Teaching students is fun and interesting. It improves the clinical skills of both students and teachers and provides small group teaching experience. It is  important for students to learn from GPs as well as hospital doctors. It also fulfills many GP appraisal requirements. (back to top)
