General Practice and Primary Health Care (GPPHC)
Course Co-ordinators: Dr James Stratford-Martin and Dr Aisha Newth
Our GPPHC course teaches students to apply a patient-centred approach to illness. The students observe the close doctor–patient relationship and the roles of other healthcare professionals in general practice.
GPPHC is the ideal opportunity for the students to develop their consultation and clinical skills. They also learn about the roles and responsibilities of a GP and other allied health professionals, e.g. Health Visitor, Pharmacist, District Nurse.
What happens?
The attachment begins with an introduction and ends with a debrief in the Department. Twenty-one sessions are spent in the practice. Two further sessions in the Department concentrate on consultation skills, using role play with an actor and video feedback.
We would like students involved with all the different aspects of a practice and its staff. A suggested timetable is provided.
Year 5 Oncology/GP/Palliative Care study guide 2011/12
Changes for 2011/12
The GP attachment will be expanded for 2011/12 as part of a new integrated General Practice, Oncology and Palliative Care attachment. Your student will be with you for the same number of sessions as before (21), but these will now be spread across 5 weeks. We hope this will give students a more valuable experience of primary care and offers benefits to practices too.
We recently held a successful workshop for Year 5 teachers to discuss the details of the new attachment and share ideas on how to make it work smoothly. Following the workshop we have now developed a Hints and Tips for Year 5 Teachers document which we hope will be helpful.
