Clinical Institute of Obstetrics and Gynaecology
The Clinical Institute of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (CIOG) was set up as a Centre of Excellence in 2004 to embrace the wealth of clinical academic activities in Obstetrics and Gynaecology undertaken across three Imperial hospital campuses, St Mary’s, Queen Charlotte’s on the Hammersmith site and Chelsea and Westminster.
Together, the three hospital Trusts offer services and training across all sub-specialties:
- Reproductive Medicine
- Surgical Gynaecology
- Maternal Medicine
- Preterm Labour
- Fetal Medicine
- Gynaecological Oncology
The Director is Professor Phillip Bennett, while the academic lead on the St Mary’s campus is Professor Lesley Regan and the academic lead on Chelsea & Westminster campus is Professor Mark Johnson.
In addition to Imperial College London academics, its members include NHS staff interested in research.
The Institute’s chief function is to act as the point of interface between clinical work across the sector and the research-based departments, in particular the Institute of Reproductive & Developmental Biology (IRDB).
Other roles include:
Clinical academic training
Fostering clinical academic training from foundation years through specialty and PhD training through to clinical lectureships, and in particular co-ordinating posts awarded through the UK CRC/MMC Integrated Academic Training Initiative.
Translational & clinical research
Promoting translational and clinical research, in partnership with local NHS R&D offices within Imperial-associated Trusts.
Co-ordinating research activity
Co-ordinating research activity between the hospital sites to achieve critical mass in trials and promote involvement of NHS clinicians in research.
