Department of Surgery and Cancer

Academic Activity at Chelsea and Westminster

Research

Currently, there are four research fellows in obstetrics, and three research fellows in neonatology funded by the Chelsea and Westminster Trust. These posts have effectively replaced those previously badged as lecturers. All eligible research fellows are registered for higher degrees. There are in addition a substantial number of other research fellows, who are grant funded (see appendix).

The Department continues to publish strongly, with 31 PubMed cited papers in 2004 in leading general and obstetrics and Gynaecology journals.

Undergraduate Education

Professor Steer was the first deputy head of division (teaching) for undergraduate education in obstetrics, gynaecology and paediatrics, and was responsible for a major reorganisation of the undergraduate teaching programme, including completely updating the curriculum, log books, and examination structure. From August 2005, he is the DHT for the new ‘SORA’ division, assuming responsibility for undergraduate teaching in obstetrics and Gynaecology, surgery, oncology, anaesthetics and intensive care, anatomy and communication skills. He is supported by a strong administrative team based at the Chelsea and Westminster hospital, led by Julia Cork, and with the assistance of the divisional administrator, Julia Anderson.

He works closely with Mr Martin Lupton, who has been given four sessions (three funded by Imperial, one by the Chelsea and Westminster NHS trust) to develop undergraduate education strategy and delivery. These changes will clearly strengthen and further develop the role of the Chelsea and Westminster hospital as a key centre for the development of undergraduate education.
