WHO checklist
The objectives and study aim of the Surgical Checklist Implementation Project
Earlier this year, the WHO Safe Surgery Checklist was modified and mandated for use in NHS Trusts in England, by the NPSA. Imperial College London and Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust have recently been awarded an NIHR grant to undertake an in-depth national evaluation of the Checklist in England, with emphasis on Checklist usability and contribution to safer care delivery.
The main research question for this project
The key aim of the study is to evaluate the ongoing implementation of the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist and its potential impact on enhancing teamworking, improving safety attitude and culture in the NHS and impact on clinical outcomes.
The proposed study aims to capture robustly and comprehensively issues relating to the WHO Checklist usability, implementation and sustainability over time and the inter relationships with factors such as increased awareness, facilitation of teamworking and safety issues and its clinical efficacy.
1.To investigate the implementation of the Checklist by identifying real and perceived barriers and enablers.
2.To determine factors that render Checklist usage sustainable across time
3.To assess the potential for positive impact of the Checklist implementation on safety attitudes and culture in theatre and non-theatre staff (clinicians, nurses, managers)
4.To investigate the relationship between successful and sustainable Checklist implementation and safety-oriented attitudes and culture in the NHS (as a potential cause or/and outcome of Checklist implementation).
