Programme learning outcomes

This degree offers a sound theoretical background to the principles of surgical education in its broadest sense (including any interventionist discipline, from radiology to obstetrics), a rigorous academic training, an introduction to appropriate research methods and practice, and the opportunity for intellectual growth and development within a challenging, stimulating yet supportive environment. The core modules contribute towards student achievement of a number of broad learning outcomes.

Those completing the MEd will:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the policy, settings, format and processes of surgical education
  2. Display critical knowledge of contemporary educational theories and practice as relevant to surgical education
  3. Use educational theory to underpin and enhance surgical and educational practice
  4. Demonstrate practical skills of teaching and training appropriate to surgical education
  5. Use appropriately a range of simulation techniques for surgical training
  6. Appraise the use of a wide range of technology in the learning process and the contribution it may make to learner achievement
  7. Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses, from a surgical and educational perspective, of contemporary surgical education
  8. Demonstrate awareness of the nature and complexity of educational interventions
  9. Design creative solutions to complex problems in contemporary surgical education
  10. Develop a range of personal transferable skills, including group working and high level oral and written communication
  11. Have knowledge of a range of research methods and be able to use them appropriately for investigating and studying problems in surgical education
  12. Plan, conduct, analyse and write-up a piece of research
  13. Display knowledge, skills and expertise suitable for a leadership role within surgical education
  14. Be constructively critical and reflective about their own pedagogic practice
  15. Exercise appropriate professional judgement in the area of surgical education
  16. Appreciate the role of research in developing the field.
