Assessment
The final mark is secured from three components:
- Assessments of 5 core surgical technology modules and one research module - 48%. Each module will make up 8% of the final mark [5% will be derived from a post-module essay, and 3% from an assignment to be completed during each module, either a web-based assignment, a problem-based learning assignment or a presentation (5% +3%) x 6 = 48%]
- The final examination, at the end of the second year – 12%
- The Research Project - 40%. This includes production of a research plan, submission of a thesis of 10,000 to 15,000 words and a viva voce exam.
In August, the students will present a written report (dissertation) on a subject in which they have been supervised, within their chosen area. Each student will normally be given a viva on his or her thesis.
Grading in all elements of the examination is as follows:
- Distinction - 70% or better
- Merit - 60% to 69.9%
- Pass - 50% to 59.9%
- Fail - <50%
Students must obtain a pass mark in the written examination, in their dissertation and in at least 5 out of the 6 assessed modules for the award of the MSc.
