Enrique is the Academic Research Nurse at the Centre for Infection Prevention and Management (CIPM) at Imperial College, London. He is a close contributor to current research projects in work-Stream 1 “Innovation Adoption & Behaviour Change“, particularly exploring the application of behavioural sciences and social marketing approaches to improve infection prevention and control, antibiotic prescribing behaviours and vascular access care. Enrique is also involved in work-stream 4, “Capacity Building”, delivering education and research support for the MSc in Infection.
He completed training in nursing and management of nursing services in Spain, followed by an MSc in Public Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 2003, and he is currently pursuing doctoral studies exploring the relation between health literacy and illness perception in people living with HIV. Other research interests are health inequalities in infectious diseases; implementation and evaluation of new roles for nurses; policy influence on management of infectious diseases; and impact of social networks on clinicians and patients’ attitudes to infection.
Enrique has got broad clinical experience in infectious diseases including tuberculosis, tropical medicine and HIV (at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases, London), and viral hepatitis, HIV and sexually transmitted infections (at the Mortimer Market Centre, London). His work as advanced nurse practitioner
(developing and evaluating new models of care for people living with HIV) has been recognised nationally, with awards for best nurse-led initiative in 2006 from the Foundation of Nursing Studies, and the National HIV Nurses Association Clinical Excellence Award in 2009. In 2007, he developed a national HIV awareness campaign commissioned by the Royal College of Nursing, and was the National Advisor for Sexual Health and HIV for the College.
In addition to his post at the Centre for Infection, Enrique continues his work as lecturer at the Open University, with a keen interest in online education and new teaching and learning tools, including simulation and peer-led education.
