Faculty of Medicine

School of Public Health

The newly created School of Public Health, headed by Professor Elio Riboli MD MPH ScM, comprises the old Division of Epidemiology, Public Health and Primary Care (Departments of Epidemiology and Public Health, Primary Care and Public Health, Infectious Disease Epidemiology) along with the newly joined department of Genetics of Common Diseases, the new College-wide Institute for Global Health and new College-wide Clinical Trials Unit.

The Departments of Infectious Disease Epidemiology and Epidemiology and Public Health also host two MRC Centres;

The School is extensively involved, through the Academic Health Sciences Centre, with Clinical Programme Group 7 - Interventional Public Health.

The School was rated in the top two epidemiology and public health submissions to the UK’s 2009 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) and is responsible for teaching a substantial part of the undergraduate and clinical curriculum to medical students. It also has an extensive programme of postgraduate teaching, comprising taught courses, short courses and supervised higher degree students. The School has a significant research portfolio and its total research grants and contracts income in 2008/09 was £16.2 million.

The School is based around the College medical campuses: St Mary’s, Hammersmith, Charing Cross and South Kensington. With the recent emphasis on a primary care-led NHS and disease prevention, health service delivery and clinical teaching in the community, a strong research base in the key scientific disciplines that underpin such community and population-based strategies is essential. The School has a strong research and development profile while also serving the increasing needs of education and service delivery for Imperial College Faculty of Medicine in the 21st century.
