Imperial will lead one of three new British Heart Foundation (BHF) research centres focussed on repairing the damage caused by a heart attack.

Charing Cross campus celebrates Centenary
Imperial's Charing Cross campus was a hive of activity at the end of September, with people from across the campus taking part in events to celebrate ten years of the Faculty of Medicine and the College's Centenary. Research activities were showcased with interactive exhibits, local school students paid the campus a visit and staff enjoyed a celebratory barbecue and birthday cake.

Letters from the front line: medics celebrate launch of book about 'Doctors at War'
How it felt to be a practising medic on the front line is the subject of a new book which was launched as part of the College Centenary and the celebrations of ten years of the Faculty of Medicine. 'Doctors at War' collects together letters written to the St Mary's Gazette during the Boer War and two World Wars.

Hospitals and university join forces to create ground-breaking NHS Trust
The UK's largest NHS Trust - Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust - launches today (1 October) through the merger of two of the country's best hospitals and integration with a world-class university. Hammersmith Hospitals NHS Trust and St Mary's NHS Trust have come together with Imperial College London to form the UK's first Academic Health Science Centre.

Deputy Rector named new Chief Executive of Medical Research Council
The Faculty of Medicine warmly congratulates Deputy Rector Professor Sir Leszek Borysiewicz on the announcement of his appointment as the next Chief Executive of the UK's Medical Research Council. Sir Leszek has served at Imperial College since 2001, joining as Principal of the Faculty of Medicine from the University of Wales.

Female medics are underrepresented in the UK clinical academic workforce, expecially at the most senior levels, according to a new study published in the Journal of Medical Education.

Chief Executive and Principal appointed to lead UK's first Academic Health Science Centre
Professor Stephen Smith, Principal of the Faculty of Medicine at Imperial College London, has been appointed to the joint position of Principal of the Faculty of Medicine and Chief Executive of the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, with effect from 1 October 2007.

The life and work of Sir Almroth Wright honoured in Centenary lecture
Professor Michael Dunnill, Emeritus Fellow of Merton College, gave a Centenary lecture about the life and work of Sir Almroth Wright on 19th September. Sir Almroth was a pioneer of medical research in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, making St Mary's one of the first institutions in the UK to take research into the clinical domain.
