Dr Clare M Turner
Clare graduated from UCL in 2005 with a PhD in cell physiology, since then her main focus has been understanding the molecular mechanisms of injury in chronic kidney disease. She works in the renal medicine division of the department of medicine.
Research Interests
My main area of interest is the role of the pro-inflammatory P2X7 receptor in glomerulonephritis and other nephropathies including diabetic nephropathy and ischaemic reperfusion injury. P2X7 is implicated in the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines and therefore may play a role in the pathogenesis of renal disease through its role in macrophage recruitment. We have used several inhibitors of the P2X7 receptor as a possible therapy in models of glomerulonephritis and ischaemic reperfusion injury. We are currently investigating the role of the P2X7 receptor in kidney transplant rejection.
