Dr Julian RF Walters
Dr Walters's principal interests are the molecular and cellular function of the small intestine -- in particular how the development and differentiation of the mucosal epithelial cells affects nutrient transport. This include the effects of inflammatory diseases of the intestine causing malabsorption, such as coeliac disease and Crohn's disease, and the changes in gene expression during active disease and the repair process.
Current Research
On-going research projects include:
Malabsorption and metabolic bone disease Coeliac disease, IBD and osteoporosis.
Mechansims of Calcium Absorption Expression of the TRPV6 gene, calbindin-D9k and PMCA1. Vitamin D receptor mediated actions.
Diarrhoeal diseases Bile acid absorption and gene expression.
Short bowel syndrome Nutrient and hormonal effects on gene expression, growth and absorption (in collaboration with Dr A Forbes)
