Dr Michael J Crawford

I am a Reader in Mental Health Service Research in the Department of Psychological Medicine and work as an Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist for Central & North West London NHS Foundation Trust. I teach undergraduate and postgraduate students at Imperial and am co-director for a BSc in Neuroscience and Mental Health.

I trained in psychiatry at the Royal Free and Maudsley Hospital and in epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Following this I completed an MD on the management of suicidal behaviour in primary and secondary care services.

My primary academic interest is in mental health service research. I am involved in the development and evaluation of psychological and social interventions for people with complex mental health needs such as those with personality disorder and psychoses. Current projects include the 'MATISSE study': a randomised trial of the effects of art therapy for people with schizophrenia, an evaluation of factors that promote high quality care for people with personality disorder and a study examining the impact of brief intervention for alcohol misuse among people who present to hospital services following an episode of self-harm. I am involved in collaborative research with users of mental health services and co-chair of a research interest group on ‘Service User Involvement in Services’.
