Mr Michael Wortley

Michael Wortley is a PhD student in the Respiratory Pharmacology group, part of the Pharmacology and Toxicology Section at the National Heart and Lung Institute (NHLI).

Prior to studying at Imperial, Michael worked as a research technician at King’s College London and completed a B.Sc. in Biology at University College London (2007).  In 2008, he was awarded a studentship funded by the Medical Research Council to study Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), with which he undertook the Masters in Biomedical Research in October 2008 followed by his PhD which is started in October 2009.

His current research area is investigating the nature of chronic cough associated with airway diseases in man, particularly COPD. As part of his doctorate research project Michael will examine the role of the transient receptor potential (TRP) ion channels in disease-associated cough, with a view to validating potential new therapies for this troublesome symptom.

Finally, Michael is part of NHLI’s Postgraduate Research Student Committee.
