Professor Peter Goldstraw

Peter Goldstraw is Consultant Thoracic Surgeon to the Royal Brompton Hospital and Professor of Thoracic Surgery at Imperial College London, UK.

Professor Peter Goldstraw is a graduate of the University of Birmingham and a Fellow of the Royal Colleges of Edinburgh and England. After training in Scotland and South Africa he was appointed Consultant Thoracic Surgeon to the Royal Brompton Hospital in 1979. He has held consultant posts at University College Hospital, the Whittington Hospital, the Middlesex Hospital, Benenden Hospital and with the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force.

He has given over 380 lectures at over 180 International and 80 National conferences, including the FG Pearson lecture on 2 occasions and the OT Claggett, Michael Boyd, Tudor Edwards, EP Richards and Robert Henderson Memorial Lectures. He has been awarded the Price Thomas Gold Medal from the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2004, a Lifetime Achievement Award by the British Thoracic Oncology Group in 2006, Honorary membership of the ESTS in 2007, the Merit Award of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) in 2007 and a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain and Ireland in 2010.

He has published over 270 articles in peer-reviewed journals and over 55 chapters in specialist textbooks. He has been on the editorial board of several specialist journals and a reviewer for a wide range of journals. He co-edited the Lung and Pleural Tumours chapters of the UICC 7th Edition of TNM Classification of Malignant Tumours, and the TNM Supplement: A Commentary on Uniform Use. He was executive editor for the Handbook of Staging in Thoracic Oncology published by the IASLC/UICC/AJCC and the corresponding Manual.

He was the Chairman of the UK Cardiothoracic Training Committee, a member of the European Board of Thoracic Surgery and UK representative to the European Union of Medical Specialists section of Cardiothoracic Surgery. He was the Chair of the IASLC Staging Project from its inception in 1998 until the publication of the 7th edition of TNM in 2009. He is a board member and President-elect of the IASLC.
