Dr Paresh A Malhotra
I am a HEFCE Senior Clinical Lecturer in the Division of Brain Sciences and Consultant Neurologist at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. My research work focusses on the cognitive deficits that are caused by Neurological conditions such as stroke and degenerative diseases, and developing treatments for these impairments.
In particular, I am interested in disorders of attention and motivation, and the use of imaging techniques to understand how they are caused. My previous work looked at cognitive deficits in patients with damage to the right cerebral hemisphere, especially in the context of spatial neglect. I am currently investigating how these deficits are influenced by motivational impairments of cognition.
The aim of understanding these problems is to improve therapeutic effectiveness and I am actively involved in the development and assessment of novel treatments. I previously carried out a successful pilot trial of noradrenergic stimulation in patients with impaired attention, and a larger trial is now in progress. In addition, I am also investigating the combined effects of pharmacological treatment and behavioural strategies on cognitive deficits secondary to focal brain damage.
Current and recent support for my research has come from the Wellcome Trust, the Academy of Medical Sciences, NIHR and the Biomedical Research Centre at Imperial College.
