Dr Paul Evans

Paul Evans is honorary senior lecturer at the National Heart and Lung Institute, and holds a Chair in Cardiovascular Science at the University of Sheffield http://www.shef.ac.uk/cardiovascularscience/profiles/evans.

Professor Evans joined the BHF Cardiovascular Sciences Unit in 2004 as a Senior Lecturer and Head of the Intracellular Signalling group and was promoted to Reader in 2010. His group is interested in the signalling pathways that regulate pro-inflammatory activation and apoptosis in endothelial cells and how these processes are altered by shear stress, a mechanical force exerted on vessel walls by flowing blood. This subject is relevant to vascular injury and atherosclerosis which develop predominantly at branches and bends in the arterial tree that are exposed to disturbed blood flow. Professor Evans’ group is also studying the signalling pathways that govern the systemic inflammatory response syndrome that can occur following coronary artery bypass grafting with cardiopulmonary bypass.

Professor Evans gained his PhD in transplantation immunology in 1996 and his studies in this field were recognized by the British Transplantation Society who awarded him the Medawar Prize in 2000. He was awarded a Training Fellowship and then a Senior Fellowship by Kidney Research UK to study endothelial cell physiology before moving to Imperial College.

Professor Evans was appointed as Senior Editor for the Journal of Inflammation and sits on the editorial boards of Biochemical Journal and several other journals.

He was a member of the MRC College of Experts (2004 – 2009) and member of the MRC Scientific Advisory Group (2003 - 2004). He also acted as a Rapporteur for the European Commission for evaluation of Marie Curie Framework 6 Research Training Networks and was appointed to the Review Panel for the evaluation of Strategic Infrastructure Projects for the Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation
