Respiratory Science Research Theme

Respiratory diseases are a major cause of morbidity and death in the UK and worldwide, and include asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, respiratory infections and lung cancer.

The National Heart and Lung Institute (NHLI) at Imperial College leads respiratory research in Europe, and is in the top three institutions world-wide. The NHLI produces more than half of the UK publications in respiratory medicine in highly cited journals. Its members have made important recent advances in understanding viral and tuberculous respiratory infections, the therapy of steriod resistance in airway disease and the genetic basis of asthma.

Respiratory Sciences is implementing an integrated research plan that will provide core Omics activities for innovative research across the spectrum of respiratory disease and lung cancer.
