School of Public Health

Wireless Networks

The College offers wireless internet access for use on laptops, smartphones, and other portable devices. At St Mary's Campus, it is broadcast from the ground and first floors of the library, which is where the signal is strongest. If you are located further away than this, then you may receive a poor signal or no signal at all.

This page outlines how you can connect your laptop to the wireless network. To connect your mobile device to the wireless network, please see the Mobile Devices FAQs. For more detalied information about the wireless facilities offered by the College, please click here.

Available Wireless Networks

There are three wireless networks to choose from:

  • Imperial-WPA (preferred wireless network)
  • Imperial (guest wireless)
  • eduroam (for visitors from other academic institutions)

'Imperial-WPA' Wireless

This is the preferred wireless network that you should choose, as it is a secure wireless network that uses your College credentials to authenticate.

You can find instructions on how to connect to it from a Windows 7 laptop here.

Instructions for connecting with Windows XP are here.

Instructions for how to connect with Mac OS 10.4 can be found here. Instructions for OS 10.5 and above are here.

Instructions for Linux can be found here.

'Imperial' Wireless

This wireless network allows visitors to have internet access on their personal laptop using web based guest access.

When a visitor connects to the 'Imperial' wireless network, they will be presented with a login web page. They will need to enter a username and password that has been requested for them by a sponsor (a member of Imperial College).

  • Visitors can read more about connecting to this wireless network here.
  • Sponsors can read more about requesting a guest account here.

Staff and students can also use this wireless network, although you need to VPN into Imperial before you will be allowed to browse any website. Hence why we recommend using 'Imperial-WPA' instead.

eduroam

This wireless network allows academics from other Higher Education institutions to access the wireless network with the credentials they use at their institution.

It also allows members of Imperial College to use eduroam wireless networks at participating institutions.

More information about this, along with connection instructions, can be found here.
